I Hate and I Love: Catullus Carmen 85

I hate you and I love you.

You may be wondering why I feel this way.

I have no idea.

But that’s how I feel.

And I. am. tortured.

 

Odi et amo. quare id faciam, fortasse requiris?

nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior.

    You’ve taken me right back to Latin O-level – thank you for the little trip down memory lane! At least this one wasn’t bowdlerised. Love the translation!

    Melissa, this is superb! The line breaks and punctuation are inspired. Catullus meets William Carlos Williams. So sweet and so cold.
